Telus Canadian Web Hosting Review Canada Host Coupon 2011

Telus Hosting

Now why even bother? … I ask myself. Well, if you live in Canada and you happen to be thinking of getting some sort of a business package with telus that includes some sort of a hosting plan, please, please don’t. For the sake of that web developer you plan to hire please!!! Hahaha … Seriously though, I have had the misfortune of having to work on a website hosted by telus. The verdict? Their hosting sucks from any and every point you look at it. First off, as many people would agree, their customer service is non-existent. Their hosting plan has absolutely no features whatsoever, and the performance on their servers just suck … and I’m being kind here. If you plan on doing anything with mySQL, or even just installing WordPress for example, you’ll have to set everything up manually yourself, including all the database upgrades and maintanence, so if you don’t know much about PHP and mySQL be forewarned. It’s not that difficult, really, but honestly if you can save yourself the trouble, time, and money, why even bother with Telus as a web host.

If you need a good host go with Host Gator. If you want a good Canadian host, go with Host Papa. And if you already have a good host and are just looking for a good domain name registrar, go with Netfirms or GoDaddy, and remember to always shop around, because you never know who is offering the best deal at the moment.

CloudFlare Secure Fast Free

HostPapa is currently offering a really good promotion, and have just added another great free feature with their hosting called CloudFlare.

$3.95/month – NO COUPON NECCESSARY … this is an awesome deal, wish they had it when I signed up with them a few years back. You might see other Canadian Web Hosting companies offering prices as low as 1.99/month, but make sure you compare the benefits and features, such as bandwith, number of addon domains available, number of email accounts, etc. … which comes much more in play if you’re thinking of setting up more than one blog or site. Because HostPapa allows you to add unlimited number of domains on this single account, if you want to set up another 20 or 30 different blogs, all you need to do is get a whole bunch of domain names from a cheap domain name registrar, like GoDaddy or Netfirms (it doesnt have to be HostPapa), and use HostPapa to just host those sites for free .. again all on this one single account. All you’ll need to do is purchase each additional domain name for 10 bucks/year .. or whatever deal you can find anywhere online. I also know that many of these “cheaper” companies do not have cPanel with Fantastico on their administrative back ends, and that alone is worth the couple of extra bucks simply in terms of the time you’ll save when setting up your site(s) … and you still get your first free domain name for life, which is automatically included with any hosting package you sign up for with HostPapa.

… well enough of that promoting : )

I completely agree with the writer. If I were a technical support rep at telus, I’d have to force myself to not look at the web to see how each and every other hosting company is years… let me rephrase, Telus is stuck in the 90’s with the hosting services. they clearly do not care about being competetive so WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE CHOOSE TELUS?? DO NOT! You’ll regret it. Godaddy or Hostgator are good choices.

THanks for a good article. I was considering going with Telus. But not any more.

I’m a web developer, recently having the misfortune of working with a Telus hosted site. It is by far the worst hosting service I’ve ever dealt with, and currently trying to figure out how to install Wordpress (a should-be simple process) is a pain in the ass.

Like the author said, please for the sake of web developers DO NOT CHOOSE TO HOST WITH TELUS!

Great post. I am working on a web site for a client using this God awful web hosting. I am really scared to try and set up the wordpress install I am supposed to install for them.

Why do people use Telus at all?! Good grief!

I will try to convert them to godaddy.com or something better. The interface for telushosting looks like they made it in 1997 and said, “Awesome it’s all done. Let’s go listen to some REM and watch the new episode of Friends” and left it. Bah!

I know this is an old post but I have to add my comment about Telus. They have been hosting my sites for a couple of years now . I am very unsophisticated on my sites (personal sites). I use FTP to manage my files. This past weekend I could no longer connect to one site…their server kicks me. I called their techs, opened a ticket and waited for resolution. You see I can connect to another Telus web site and FTP the exact same files but cannot connect with this one. After they tried they decided that since they could not replicate the problem that they should close the ticket!! I just got off the phone with them and had to open another ticket. This is now 4 day outage for me and they now state 48 hours to resolve the problem that is obviously a firewall issue. Not happy. The Telus on-line interface is so disgusting that to state it is from 1997 is being kind. The interface appears to predate Windows.

I just want to say thank you for this review. I have been having SUCH a hard time with telus’s hostings site! I thought i was just stupid, but i guess im impressed that i made it as far as i did… It is my first time making a website, and I have really enjoyed the process for the most part but anything that has to do with Telus is a disaster! Now to salvage the remains of my website and drag it’s carcass to Host Gator… Thanks again.

I made the mistake of hosting with Telus. Everytime I made some changes to the MS SQL server, I would have to wait up to 48 hours for a change to happen even though I used their Control Panel. Their turnaround was been 24-36 hours. I asked for a SQL restore and provided a BAK. They came back next 24 hours and said my version of the SQL 2008 R2 BAK doesn’t work with their SQL 2008 SP1 SQL server. I then provided one that would work but it wasn’t done 24 hours later. I called their support and asked if I could escalate a SQL restore so that they can speed it up given the situation. They said there is no such thing as escalating the ticket and I had to wait. Talk about inconsiderate! I told them I’m not asking for troubleshooting assistance which can take a while to troubleshoot. I’m asking for something a restore or if they can’t just delete and re-create the database, from that point I will import/export data. They need to prioritize the tickets. Simple add/remove/changes should be within 6 hours. All other troubleshooting should be up to 48 hours. Once my contract is over them, I’m dumping them. They don’t appreciate my business at all.
