How to Create a Subfolder in HostGator

How to Create a Subfolder in HostGator

by miso on September 20, 2011

A subfolder is a folder associated with a specific domain. For example, if you have a HostGator website, you can create subfolders for articles or images. In the URL address bar, the subfolder will appear as: “www(dot)hostgator(dot)com/articles” for the articles subdirectory, or “www(dot)hostgator(dot)com/images” for the image directory. You can easily create a subfolder in HostGator through the cPanel or the control panel. You can create as many subfolders as you wish, depending upon what the need is for your website.

Step One:

Log into the HostGator cPanel. If your domain is already pointing to HostGator, use your domain name to log into HostGator cPanel. Type your HostGator account URL into your web browser’s address bar followed by /cpanel. For example, “www(dot)yourdomainname(dot)com/cpanel”, or type: “cpanel(dot)yourdomainname(dot)com”. If you recently purchased a new account with HostGator, type: “YourSite’sIPAddress/cpanel” into your web browser’s address bar. For example, “”.

Step Two:

Enter in your HostGator username and password. Note that you only get one login per cPanel. You do not have a separate cPanel login if you have separate sub domains, parked, and addon. To log into the cPanel for an addon domain, log into the main cPanel, as all sub domains are managed under one cPanel.

Step Three:

Find your username and password in your HostGator welcome email. If you no longer have this information, contact HostGator by phone, email, or live chat for assistance.

Step Four:

Click the File Manager icon on the cPanel main screen, and select the option to open “web root.” Check the Show Hidden Files check box to allow all folders and files to be visible.

Step Five:

Click the New Folder button at the top of the page. Name the folder the name of your subfolder, and then click Create New Folder. The subfolder is automatically created on HostGator.

Now that you know how to create a subfolder on HostGator, you can use your newly acquired knowledge to customize and create your website exactly the way you like it. Subfolders can be especially useful for redirecting affiliate links and making sure that your website stays organized. They can also be used to create off shoots of your main domain, creating mini websites that correlate to the main keywords that you happen to be working with.
